Just for a bit of fun, thought I would attempt to sync the original footage with my cover of "I've written a letter to daddy." It was never going to go seamlessly as both versions are at completely different speed as well as time signatures. It looks a bit like Bette Davis is miming to my own voice, which amuses me a great deal. Here's hoping I don't get shot down by anyone who feels I may have butchered a classic.
Free or Name Your Price? This is the first time I've ever included an option where a person can donate something if they choose to. I still wanted to make the gig free for people to download, but also seeing as though I'm as penniless as musicians come, I thought I would include the 'name your price' option on the off chance that there are either;
1) some avid supporter's of independent music who happen to quite like what I do...
2) some well off generous people who happen to quite like what I do... ...and so if anyone can spare a few coppers then please do so. Think of it as throwing change into a busker's hat, except in a more digitalised form!

seems that I haven't sent out any badgering emails via the mailing list in a while,
so I thought it might be time to come out of my shell and be sociable for once...
(well... in the online sense at least.)
Indeed, I was quite over the
moon to be playing with BBC 6 music favourites and Gryff Rhys (Super Furry Animals)
produced duo - The Lovely Eggs - earlier this month. One half of The Lovely Eggs
was formerly in all girl 90's indie band, Angelica - whom I just so happened to
adore in my late teens. So of course, I brought all my Angelica cd's to be signed
didn't I? Like you do.
Anyway...
the lovely people at Rocking Horse Rehearsal Rooms were kind enough to record
(most) of my live set once again, so I have uploaded it for free listening and free
downloading for anyone who wants to do either of those things...
See below for a listen.

If you're a musician or in a band, they provide rehearsal space,
and recording studios and will even record your band rehearsal for a small fee if
you want a decent recording of yourselves but are a tad strapped for cash.

Girl From Winter Jargon supports "The Lovely Eggs"
I am suitably over the moon to be supporting "The Lovely Eggs" next month.

For those who don't know, one half of The Lovely Eggs - Holly Ross - was formerly the singer / guitarist in all-girl indie group, Angelica.
And, as those who know me will know - I was (and still am) quite a fan of Angelica. They did afterall provide me with a pleasing alternative to other all-girl groups who existed back in the mid 90's... ahem.
Angelica were also pretty much the first band I'd ever heard of at that point who not only wrote their own songs, played their own instruments and sang songs about cutting off people's heads (!) - but more importantly - did all of the above whilst being entirely female!
I realise of course through having a wider knowledge of bands and musicians now than I did back then, that there are actually plenty of female musicians that exist in bands that I simply never knew about at the time. Nowadays, with the likes of Warpaintexisting, and the editors of major music magazines being female - it's all fairly commonplace and female musicians do what they like without feeling as though they need to prove a point or compete with male counterparts. Indeed it doesn't really matter about what gender a musician is, so long as you like the way they sound, right?
But speaking from the point of view of a teenage girl in the 90's -who went to guitar shops for replacement strings only to be asked "if i realised that the thinnest string is usually the first to break", or indeed - who went on to form Winter Jargon only to receive back handed compliments on my guitar playing from male guitarists from other bands, such as- "You know you're not bad for a girl..." - bands like Angelica were a shining beacon of hope!
But enough about the past already... The Lovely Eggs are also very good, and are particularly excellent for anyone who enjoys surreal and hilarious indie punk-pop from a married couple with fabulous, almost matching haircuts!!!
The Lovely Eggs are set to play The Fishtank next month in Durham on Friday the 4th of May. Tickets are £5
Okay so above you can find a widget from http://alonetone.com/winterjargon/ I know technically the Girl From Winter Jargon Gluefactory gig is already on http://winterjargon.bandcamp.com/, but I just wanted to raise a bit of awareness about who alonetone are and what they do, as I am sure they will likely be just what someone out there is looking for. Essentially alonetone is like an alternative to soundcloud, except that they don't have any means of upgrading and apparently are not actually after your money.
Everything you upload there can be downloaded for free. There isn't actually any other option, neither is there any means of selling. The whole deal with alonetone is that they are a one person operation (and a few friends) and have set up a simple, non commercial website for musicians who want to share things for free and meet other musicians.

"alonetone is a place for small label, do-it-yourself and everyday musicians and bands to upload their music and freely share it on the internets.
If you make music (and own the rights to it) then this site is something you should know about!
Really speaking though, I will always favour bandcamp.com as my #1 choice because I think it's a superior place for unsigned, independent bands and artists, and I have yet to find anything better. You can sell your music, or give it away.
Bandcamp only take a small percentage of sales - certainly compared to other high trafficked places like itunes where you have to be prepared to say goodbye to any hope of profit in exchange for the exposure you'll get in return.
You can collect email addresses from anyone who downloads your music.
You can customise the look of the page so it looks like an extension of your actual website. Your band's music page can look far more professional on bandcamp.com than it will ever look on reverbnation,myspace, soundcloud, etc... because you'll be confined to the design of those websites.
Possibly best of all... No flippin social network integration. (Hooray!!)
In my opinion bandcamp's only real flaw is that they don't allow you to upload covers. They will remove your entire account with no explanation if they find you out. (I learnt this the hard way)
Soundcloud however, do allow covers and remixes and it seems to be quite a popular place and first choice for many. For some reason though, I just can't seem to get along with soundcloud. Possibly if you'd never heard of bandcamp.com before then I could understand why soundcloud.com it might seem like the best thing since... erm... myspace.
Granted, maybe you prefer the fact that you can upload randomly and remix and have the freedom in doing as you please and that you like the whole communicative thing too. I can understand too, how having people comment on their favourite parts of your songs or to give constructive critisim on a demo ect... can have it's uses. But in my opinion, soundcloud widgets are butt ugly and awkward. You have to pay to upgrade for nicer-looking ones, which I think is a tad ridiculous. alonetone.com does most of what soundcloud.com does (arguably better in some cases) for free. The main difference is that far more people use and have heard of soundcloud and only a very small amount of people use alonetone. Hence why I am prepared to write about the underdog. Alonetone have a very noble approach in what they do and I think they deserve more recognition for it.
So for now, although ultimately I will be sticking with bandcamp.com for most things, I will say that on http://alonetone.com/winterjargon there are some additional notes on the gluefactory tracks that aren't anywhere else online. Also, I am planning on releasing some covers soon, and I might just use alonetone over soundcloud to promote them. Afterall, their widgets look so much better.
